Why is it important to understand what knowledge and skills are required when you apply for a job?
What’s a job description?
‘A job description is a concise summary of the duties, responsibilities, qualifications, and expectations associated with a specific role within an organisation.’
When you see an advert for a job, in the sports industry or any other industry, it will include a job description. This document will tell you all about the organisation and important details about the role.
The job description will specify:
- Information about the organisation or company
- The job location
- Salary details, pension arrangements, holidays and sick pay and other related issues.
- Information about how to apply for the role and the deadline for the application.
You can search for a job on various sports sector websites. There are a few website examples below. Please note that the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol is not responsible for the content of external websites.
Here are some points to remember when answering requirements on a job description:
Qualifications – where and when you gained them
Skills – what your skills are and examples of where you’ve used them
Role and responsibilities – include key tasks you’ve completed in a previous role, in education, or whilst volunteering that would show your ability to do this job.
While you are in education the two most important requirements are:
Qualifications
Job qualifications can include the education, skills, experience, and personal qualities you possess to enable you to do a job successfully. A qualification is an official record that you have completed a course successfully.
Skills
Most sports require knowledge and practice to achieve a skilled performance and to do a sport activity well. Skills are learned abilities that you achieve through training and practice. Skill can also be defined as the ability to perform at a high standard.

Top tips
- Remember that your job application is your opportunity to tell your potential employer all about your skills.
- Make sure you match your skills to what the job requires of you.
- Keep your answers informative but not too long, or the employer will lose interest.
- Sing your own praises but don’t exaggerate. You don’t want to be asked something you can’t answer if you make it to interview stage!
