Unit 1: Planning and Undertaking a Sports Session
About Lesson

What we need to consider to ensure the session is safe for participants and coaches

Health and Safety is the most important aspect of any coaching session.

Students, parents, amateur sports persons all want to do their sports outdoor activities in a safe manner. Injuries do occur and that is acceptable within sports.

However, if injuries occur that could be avoided, for example, because the football pitch is uneven, then that is not acceptable.

To help ensure Health and Safety standards are met, there are several pieces of legislation you should keep in mind when creating a session.

Legislation is the law or a set of laws that have been passed by Parliament. A number of these cover our area of work within the Sport, Leisure and Recreation and Outdoor Activities.

The list below shows Key Legislation in the UK that impact sport. Most of them are general legislation that is applied to a range of industries not just sport.

Legislation that impacts sport in the UK:

  • Health and Safety at Work Act (1974)
  • Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrence Regulations (RIDDOR) (1995).
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) (2002)
  • Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) (2002)
  • Health and Safety (First aid) Regulations (1981)
  • Manual Handling Operations Regulations (1992)
  • Fire Safety and Safety of Places of Sport Act (1987)
  • Adventurous Activities Licensing Authority Regulations (2004)

This legislation will be discussed further in Unit 3.
