Session Planner


Previously in the unit we talked about the importance of the ‘session planner’. Now we’re going to explore this further.


A session can be split into three different sections, which will help you plan a session.

For a successful session plan, considerations should be given to all three of the sections:

  • Before the event
  • During the event
  • Post event and evaluation


What should a good ‘Session Planner’ consider



Here are a few pointers to consider when planning your session.

Date and time

Number of participants

Length of session? (time)

Equipment required

Responsibility of the coach

Check health and safety

What health and safety considerations should we take into account?

What should we do in an emergency?

Injury issues from the medical form

Correct sequence for delivery of the session

Correct use of the facilities and equipment

Demonstration of correct skills and techniques

What is plan B? What do you do if something is not correct?

Aims and objectives

Correct warm up

Main body of activity with fitness and technical work

What to do during cool down session

Feedback session

Providing feedback to the sports or outdoors people, what they did well and where to improve

Are there any injury issues arising from the session?
